N.D A National Park- de Dromont Alpes-de-Haute-Provence

Our last day at Volonne.  We headed off into the hills on some of the white roads!  Saw the most stunning scenery, both mountains and valleys and some little hamlets  There has obviously been a lot of volcanic activity some millions of years ago.  The highest point we got to was a mountain pass at 1236metres. Most of the area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Unexpectedly in the middle of nowhere, we found a restaurant, on a ‘Gite commune’, for want of a better description (could be described as a holiday resort), and had a lovely lunch in the shade by a river.  Had to use my (Delia’s) French – no English spoken!  We then took a black road and although it’s on the map, after about 3 kilometres of rough road, we came to a sign saying ‘Authorised Vehicles Only’ and a barrier, so we had to turn round and go back!  Malcolm thoroughly enjoyed it!!  We finally came to the other side of the mountain and it was like stepping out of the wardrobe into this wonderful green view falling away before us with farms dotted here and there the sun was shining and it took on a magical look and feel. To complete this wonderful day out we have a Farewell Dinner in the evening. Only to meet up again the next evening for a welcome Drink at the next camp site!!
